How To Cosplay As Smurfette On A Budget
One of my favorite budget cosplay characters is Smurfette. She can easily be created for under $20, and it’s an outfit that will be instantly recognizable. Best of all, it works as part of a group costume if you want to be with some guys who dress as ‘The Smurfs’ or a group of girls and be an ‘army of Smurfettes’.
What You’ll Need to Cosplay Play as a Smurf
- Blue Shirt
- Blue Facepaint
- Blond Wig or Blond Hair
- White Sun Dress
- White Gloves (Optional)
Character Background: The Smurfs
The Smurfs are a group of small blue creatures who live in the forest. They have been led by Papa Smurf, and their main enemies are always Gargamel – an evil wizard looking to capture them so that he can extract their essence for his uses! The rest of these adventures include running into other fantastical beings while searching through nature’s wonders; overcoming challenges with teamwork (and sometimes love), and friendship-all leading people not only to find what they’re meant 2 lives but also gain knowledge about themselves along way.
How to Find the Perfect Blue Shirt to Cosplay as a Smurf
This is a great option for those who want to do costume cosplay. Most people will have at least one solid blue shirt in their closet and it works no matter what type you choose – whether it’s a sweatshirt or t-shirt.
If buying clothing items, I would recommend getting something bright like Smurfy Blue ( hex code #4695D6 ) since that color represent royalty well enough without being overbearing.”
Several of our readers have told us they had success finding a shirt on Amazon. Here’s a link to our favorite shirt (link)
How to find the perfect blue facepaint to cosplay as a Smurf
The first thing you need to do before painting your face is deciding what brand of paint will work best. There are many brands out there, and they all have their pros & cons; however, I found that one particular type – Mehron Makeup’s facepaint was perfect for cosplay purposes because it went on smoothly without any smudging or rubbing off easily (plus affordable!). Once deciding between light blues/baby blue colors ones should choose wisely since these only differ by tone.
How to find the perfect blond hair to cosplay as a Smurf
One of Smurfette’s most iconic items is her long blond hair which stands in contrast to the other Smurfs who are mostly bald and just wear a white hat. You can include any sort of white hat with Smurfette, but that’s optional.
If you have long blond hair, then you are golden on this one. However, if you don’t feel your hair fits with the character, you can just buy a simple blond wig. These are very common and you could get a budget nylon wig for under $20. This will be the most expensive item of the whole outfit.
How to find the perfect white sundress to cosplay as a Smurf
Smurfette always wore a white sundress, and thankfully these are relatively common. Many people will already have this in their closet right now meaning that you won’t need to buy anything at all.
If you don’t have a sun dress that you think would fit the bill, then I suggest checking out your local thrift store. I go to the Goodwill stores near my house a few times per month, and I always see sun dresses there. They are most common to find there in the fall after people start purging their closets of summer clothes.
Another popular time to check in January because so many people clean out their closets for the new year, and they are making space for the new items they got during Christmas.
If you hit your local shop at either of those times, you’ll likely be able to find a nice white or light color sundress that will be perfect to cosplay as Smurfette.
How to find the perfect white gloves to cosplay as a Smurf
I wrote a complete detailed guide on how to make the white smurf gloves in my post about ‘How to dress as a Smurf on a budget’. You can check out the full details there if you want the step-by-step guide, but I find it far less important for Smurfette.
Because you have long blond hair, blue face paint, and an iconic white dress, it becomes super obvious who you are. This can be a little more complicated for smurfs as there are a lot of cartoon characters with blue skin.
One tip though is if you choose not to wear gloves, I strongly encourage you to just let your hands be bare. You don’t want to paint them blue or white as this could risk you getting bodypaint on items when you are in the vendor hall. I also like keeping my hands unpainted as I don’t want to risk any of the paint coming off while I am eating one of the meals at the convention.
